Cruel Intentions!

I chose the movie "Cruel Intentions" because it is one of my favourite movies. It has amazing actors in it and has a wonderful strory line.

This movie based on a bet that step brother and step sister, Katheryn and Sebastian, make. Katheryn makes the bet that Sebastian won't be able to get in bed with Annette. Annette is a young virgin who wants to wait untill love. If Katheryn wins shes gets Sebastians Jaguar, if Sebastian wins, he gets Kathryn.

Sebastian has a reputaion. This reputation includes sleeping with lots of girls. Getting them in bed and then never talking to them again. His line; "You have killer legs. I'd love to photograph them." He needs to keep this reputation up, so the bet is made on Annette because her father is going to be the new Principle at their High School. Sebastian thinks this will be great for his reputation and will be his "greatest victory yet."

The opening is really good, because it has a really funky song playing the background. The beginning part shows a pan across New York City. It shows the motorway and the car that Sebastian drives going along it. It really drew me in because the song and the scenery was a good mix together that really went well as a combination. After that, it then has a close up of Sebastians face, but upside down. It pans out and shows that he is in an office with a councillor. He is in the counciller talking about his current "reputation." Sebastian is saying lines like, "I'm a fool." and "I can't feel sorry for myself because i'm some poor little rich boy." He doesn't really mean it, he is only trying to make the councillor feel sorry for him and is trying to make the her think he is going to stop all his "bad habits." Really it is just an act. He goes on to tell her she has killer legs and he would love to photograph them, and then tells her that was the old him and he has changed. You can tell Sebastian is putting on an act because of the way he says things. He says them almost like he means them but instead with sarcastic tone. The character of Sebastian is a very unique one. He is a charming young man, very smart, good looking, but with a bad reputation that he likes to upkeep.

The opening scene fits in with the rest of the movie, because of two things. You see Sebastian driving his car, the one that plays a big part in the whole movie but especially in the bet. The next part of it when hes in the councillor fits in perfectly too, because you see Sebastians character very clearly. You automatically know he is a flirt because of the way he is with when hes with the councillor.

My Auntie suggested I watch this movie, becasue it is also one of her favourites. The thing that appealed to me most about this movie was the actors in it and the story line. When i read the back of the DVD, I was automatically into it. When I started watching it, I really enjoyedthe characters and what their personalitys were like and also the music. I really enjoyed this movie a lot.

  1. Good start-- you have clearly explained what happens in the beginning of the movie, how it links to the rest of the film and why it appeals to you. Can you add a link to a video of the opening sequence so I can see it?

Next, write a blog post about how the director has used film techniques in this opening to create a mood and fit within a genre-- look at the O Tamaiti exemplar to get ideas of how to organise your discussion. Looking forward to seeing more!

  2. This looks the same as last time: same comment, then: add a link so I can watch it, and get started on your next post about how the director has created a mood and fit the film within a genre with film techniques. Get going!
